Sedbergh and in particular our building has always had a connection with the woollen industry. Sleepy Elephant's building once housed the premises of a dyer and yarn merchant who distributed roughly spun oiled wool called bump to local hand-knitters. The knitters made it up into stockings and caps: some for the sailors of Nelson's fleet. So it seems appropriate that we should stock a range of designer knitwear. Some of our designs come from Ireland, some from Scotland and some from Nepal but all are either entirely hand-knitted or hand-finished. Another use for wool much demonstrated by local craftspeople is the making of felt. We stock handbags, belts and accessories which illustrate the versatility of this oldest of fabrics. Our 'Linen Press' range of garments are made in Portugal from 100% linen. The various weights make it suitable for both winter and summer wear. The collection for 2007 features deep pink, denim blues and white with jeans, skirts, jackets and shirts coordinating for casual or smart occasions. Our Fair Trade suppliers bring us velvet and cotton garments from Nepal and India. |
